From a young age, we are visually shaped by the environment in which we grow up.
I grew up on the steppe by the sea. Both, like the sky above them, are endless, calm, and liberating. I didn’t encounter the forest until I was 16, when I came to Austria. Since then, I have been searching there for a horizon, but I cannot find one because of its tenacity. I get lost, lose myself, can’t breathe. The forest swallows me, digests me, absorbs me into its body. I dissolve.
A wall collage of black-and-white photographs of the forest, mounted on a white-painted wooden slat, was exhibited at the Sempterdepot in Vienna as part of Foto Wien 2022.
